What Is Nasal Valve Collapse?
More than 20 million Americans suffer from nasal obstruction — a condition that restricts airflow through the nose and negatively impacts quality of life, sleep, exercise tolerance, and overall wellbeing. One of the most common and frequently overlooked causes of nasal obstruction is nasal valve collapse (NVC).
The nasal valve is the narrowest point inside the nose, located where the cartilage on the side of the nose meets the nasal septum. When the lateral nasal cartilage is weak or loses structural integrity, it can collapse inward during inhalation — physically blocking airflow. Nasal valve collapse is as prevalent as septal deviation and turbinate hypertrophy among nasal and sinus patients, yet it is often missed because it is not detectable on imaging and requires a clinical examination to diagnose properly.
A simple self-test called the Cottle’s Maneuver can suggest nasal valve collapse: place one or two fingertips on your cheeks on either side of your nose and gently press and pull outward. If this temporarily improves your nasal breathing, your nasal obstruction may be related to nasal valve collapse — and you may be a candidate for LATERA®.
Are You Experiencing These Symptoms?
- Nasal congestion or stuffiness that does not respond to medications
- Nasal blockage or obstruction — one side or both
- Chronic difficulty breathing through the nose
- Trouble sleeping or snoring related to nasal blockage
- Inability to get adequate air through the nose during exercise or exertion
- Temporary relief when using nasal strips or pulling outward on the sides of your nose
How the LATERA® Implant Works
The LATERA® Absorbable Nasal Implant provides structural support to the collapsing lateral nasal cartilage — the cartilage on the sidewall of the nose that caves inward with each breath in patients with nasal valve collapse. The implant is a small, absorbable device inserted into the upper lateral cartilage of the nose during a simple in-office procedure.
Once placed, LATERA® supports the lateral wall of the nose and prevents it from collapsing inward during inhalation, immediately improving nasal airflow. Over approximately 18 months, the implant is gradually absorbed by the body, but the structural improvement in nasal airway patency remains. Patients report no visible changes to the appearance of their nose — the implant is entirely internal and leaves no external incisions or marks.
Clinical results are compelling: 86% of patients implanted with LATERA® report improved breathing through the nose, and 93% are satisfied with their appearance results. Dr. Brodner has been teaching other ENT surgeons across the country — and via Zoom — the proper techniques for LATERA® placement since 2017, reflecting the level of mastery he brings to this procedure.
Why Dr. Brodner for LATERA® Implants?
Dr. Brodner is not simply a provider of the LATERA® Implant — he helped develop it. In December 2016, Dr. Brodner served as a Chief Investigator in the clinical trials that brought LATERA® to market for both in-office and operating room use. Since then, he has been designated a Key Opinion Leader by the manufacturer and regularly travels nationally to train fellow ENT surgeons. Patients at The Center for Sinus, Allergy, & Sleep Wellness benefit from a physician whose expertise with this procedure is literally unmatched in the field. LATERA® may be combined with other procedures such as Vivaer® Nasal Airway Remodeling, Coblation® Turbinate Reduction, or Balloon Sinus Dilation when multiple factors are contributing to nasal obstruction.
Frequently Asked Questions About LATERA® Implants
What is the LATERA® Implant and what does it treat?
The LATERA® Absorbable Nasal Implant is a small, absorbable device inserted into the lateral nasal cartilage to provide structural support and prevent nasal valve collapse — one of the most common causes of nasal obstruction. It improves nasal airflow by supporting the sidewall of the nose so it does not cave inward during breathing.
Is the LATERA® procedure performed in the office?
Yes. At The Center for Sinus, Allergy, & Sleep Wellness, LATERA® Implant placement is performed entirely in our Boynton Beach office as an in-office procedure. No hospital, surgery center, or general anesthesia is required. Local anesthesia is used to ensure patient comfort throughout the procedure.
Does the LATERA® Implant change how my nose looks?
No. The LATERA® Implant is inserted entirely inside the nose — there are no external incisions, no visible scars, and no changes to the external appearance of the nose. Clinical data confirms that 93% of patients are satisfied with their appearance results after receiving the LATERA® Implant.
How long does the LATERA® Implant last?
The LATERA® Implant is absorbable and gradually dissolves over approximately 18 months. However, the structural improvement in nasal airway patency achieved by the implant is designed to be maintained long-term even after the implant has been fully absorbed. Most patients experience durable nasal breathing improvement well beyond the absorption period.
What is nasal valve collapse and how do I know if I have it?
Nasal valve collapse occurs when the cartilage on the sidewall of the nose is weak and collapses inward during inhalation, blocking airflow. A quick self-test — placing fingertips on your cheeks beside the nose and gently pulling outward — can suggest nasal valve collapse if your breathing improves with this maneuver. Dr. Brodner can confirm the diagnosis and determine LATERA® candidacy during your consultation. Call (561) 735-8750 to schedule.
Can LATERA® be combined with other nasal procedures?
Yes. LATERA® is frequently combined with other in-office procedures at The Center for Sinus, Allergy, & Sleep Wellness — including Vivaer® Nasal Airway Remodeling, Coblation® Turbinate Reduction, and Balloon Sinus Dilation — when multiple contributors to nasal obstruction are present. Combining procedures in a single visit maximizes outcomes.
Is the LATERA® Implant covered by insurance?
The Center for Sinus, Allergy, & Sleep Wellness accepts most major insurance plans. Coverage for the LATERA® Implant varies by plan. Call our office at (561) 735-8750 and our team will help verify your benefits and explain any out-of-pocket costs before your appointment.
Why should I choose Dr. Brodner for LATERA® Implants?
Dr. Brodner is not just experienced with LATERA® — he was a Chief Investigator in the clinical trials that brought it to market and has been a national Key Opinion Leader since 2017. He regularly trains other ENT surgeons on proper LATERA® placement technique. Patients at The Center for Sinus, Allergy, & Sleep Wellness receive LATERA® care from the physician who literally helped develop the procedure.
