Strep Throat
Strep throat is an infection caused by streptococcal bacteria affecting the throat and often the tonsils. It can cause a sudden, severe sore throat, painful swallowing, fever above 101°F, swollen tonsils and lymph nodes, and white or yellow spots on a reddened throat.
Highly contagious, strep throat usually develops within two to five days after exposure. Diagnosis is through a physical exam and throat culture. Treatment involves antibiotics, often resolving symptoms within three to seven days, though full healing may take up to two weeks. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing spread.
Inflamed Tonsils and Adenoids
Tonsillitis refers to inflammation of the tonsils, which are part of the body’s immune defense located at the back of the throat. You might notice redness, swelling, or a white/yellow coating on the tonsils, signaling infection. The adenoids, tissue behind the nose and soft palate, can also become swollen, making swallowing or breathing difficult.
Symptoms include severe sore throat, painful swallowing, cough, headache, fever, chills, and swelling around the cheeks and neck. Tonsillitis can sometimes be caused by strep throat and is usually treated with antibiotics like penicillin. Viral tonsillitis often resolves within four to seven days. Repeated infections may lead to surgical removal of tonsils and/or adenoids. Adenoidectomy may also help children with chronic ear infections.
Laryngitis
The larynx, or voice box, controls airflow and sound production. Laryngitis is inflammation of this area and typically causes hoarseness, coughing, difficulty breathing (especially in children), and sometimes loss of voice. Besides infection, acid reflux or vocal cord nodules can trigger it. Laryngitis often improves naturally within two weeks with rest, hydration, and humidified air.
Pharyngitis
Pharyngitis is inflammation of the pharynx, the tissue behind the mouth that guides food to the esophagus and air to the lungs. The main symptom is painful swallowing. It often occurs alongside laryngitis and usually resolves on its own with fluids, rest, and moisture.
Epiglottitis
The epiglottis is a flap at the base of the tongue that prevents food from entering the windpipe. When inflamed, epiglottitis can swell and block the airway, becoming a medical emergency. Causes include infections, chemical exposure such as illicit drugs, severe heat injury, or trauma. If your sore throat interferes with swallowing, seek immediate medical care.
